Géza Szilvay nació en Budapest en 1943. Estudió violín en el Conservatorio Béla Bartók y pedagogía del violín en la Academia de Música de Budapest, donde se graduó en 1966. También estudió Derecho y Ciencias Políticas en la Universidad de ELTE de Budapest y se doctoró en 1970.
Desde 1971 ha sido profesor de violín en el East Helsinki Music Institute y desde 1978 también en la Academia Sibelius. En 1984 fue nombrado Director del East Helsinki Music Institute. En 1972 Géza Szilvay y el violonchelista Csaba Szilvay fundaron la orquesta Helsinki Junior Strings (en la actualidad Helsinki Strings), que han dirigido desde entonces.
Los hermanos Szilvay han logrado un reconocimiento internacional tanto como pedagogos de cuerda como por su labor como directores y profesores de orquestas de niños y jóvenes. Como reconocimiento de su trabajo por la cultura en los jóvenes, les fue otorgada la Orden del Caballero del León Finés en 1981, el Premio de Cultura de Finlandia en 1983, el Galardón del Estado Húngaro a la Actividad Cultural en 1990, el Premio de Cultura de Helsinki en 1995 y el Galardón “Pro Musica” en 1999. Géza Szilvay fue condecorado con el prestigioso Premio “Acento” de la Asociación de Escuelas de Música Finlandesas en 2005 y el Premio Internacional Kodály en 2007.
La pedagogía Colourstrings, desarollada por los hermanos Szilvay, ha logrado una reputación internacional y hoy en día se enseña en todo el mundo. Un buen número de instituciones especiales de Colourstrings – escuelas, centros y sociedades – se han establecido en varios países europeos para llevar a cabo y continuar este concepto de enseñanza basado en el niño.
Géza Szilvay was born in Budapest in 1943. He studied the violin at the Béla Bartók Conservatory and violin pedagogy at the Budapest Music Academy, where he graduated in 1966. He also studied Law and Political Science at the ELTE University in Budapest and took his doctor´s degree in 1970.
Since 1971 he has been teaching the violin at the East Helsinki Music Institute and from 1978 at the Sibelius Academy as well. In 1984 he was appointed Principal of the East Helsinki Music Institute. The renowned Helsinki Junior Strings (at present the Helsinki Strings) orchestra was founded by Géza Szilvay and cellist Csaba Szilvay in 1972 and they have conducted the orchestra ever since.
The Szilvay brothers have gained international recognition both as string pedagogues and as conductors and educators of children´s and youth orchestras. In recognition of their work for youth culture they were awarded the Knight Order of the Finnish Lion in 1981, the Culture Prize of Finland in 1983, the Hungarian State Award for Cultural Activity in 1990, the Culture Prize of Helsinki in 1995 and the "Pro Musica" Award in 1999. Géza Szilvay was decorated with the prestigeous "Accent" Prize of the Association of Finnish Music Institutes in 2005 and the International Kodály Prize in 2007.
The Colourstrings approach has gained international reputation and is now taught all over the world. A number of special Colourstrings institutions -schools, centers and societies- have been established in several European countries to realize and further this child-centered teaching concept.
