DEREN ERYILMAZ
In this workshop Deren Eryilmaz will give an overview of The Taubman Approach and discuss the technical difficulties we face as pianists; why we get fatigue, pain and even injure ourselves trying to overcome those difficulties. She will explain what are the harmful motions we do over and over again during our practice, why we do them and how we can replace them with healthy ones. This will be an interactive workshop so at the end of each session, there will be a Q&A session. All questions are welcome.
First Session: 7 Harmful motions and how to avoid them.
1- Isolation
2- Streching
3- Collapsing (relaxing the wrist)
4- Curling
5- Twisting
6- Holding up
7- Digging into the keys
In this first session Deren will explain what are those harmful movements, why we do them and what we get as a result. She will then discuss the alternative movements offered by the Taubman Approach. There will be a brief explanation of The Basic Principles of the Taubman Approach such as Alignment (of the body and the unity of the fingers, hand and forearm), Freedom of the forearm, Rotation, Walking Hand&Arm, Moving In&Out and Shaping and their profound effect on our technique.
Second Session: Balance and Coordination
In this session Deren will dive into each concept a bit deeper. She will explain how to find the right height, the role of gravity, alignment of the body and the playing aparatus (forearm, hand and fingers), forearm rotation: its purpose and common misunderstandings.
Concepts of Walking Hand&Arm, Moving In&Out and Shaping will be explained with examples. If time permits, other important concepts like Fingering, Grouping, Interdependence of the Hands and Enslavement to Notation will be mentioned.
Third Session: Effortless Crossings in Scales and Arpeggios
We will be discussing how to cross over the thumb and under the hand with less effort and avoid any accents, unevenness or fatique playing scales and arpeggios.
Fourth Session: Leaps you never miss, dependable trills and effortless octaves and double thirds
In this session Deren will discuss solutions to some of the most common difficulties such as big leaps, trills, long octave passages and double thirds. Since this will be an online workshop, if sent in advance, she can also answer passage questions coming from the participants.
This workshop is for piano teachers, advanced students with an interest in pedagogy, as well as anybody interested in its content.
On the day after the workshop at 9 a.m. (CET), participants will receive private access to watch the recording during the next week, until Monday 24 March at 9 a.m. (CET). This access is protected with password and IP identification.
To obtain a certificate of attendance it is necessary to attend the workshop live and to be in front of the active camera for at least 80% of the total time.
