This in-person workshop presents a four-day journey through violin technique and its teaching with internationally acclaimed pedagogue Grigory Kalinovsky. We will learn strategies that allow us to build technique or reorganize it when necessary, with direct application in exercises, etudes, and repertoire to ensure musical integration. Participants who wish are also invited to bring their own students or to volunteer themselves to experience firsthand the effectiveness of these practices.

 
Our days together will unfold as follows:
 
Day 1 (16:00 - 20:00)
1. Posture, basic instrument set-up, choice of chin-rests, shoulder-pads.
2. Bow-grip - basic setup, right-hand finger dexterity, balancing the bow.
3. Basic sound production - right shoulder swings, open strings.
4. Organic bow division.
5. Basic bow strokes - collé, martele, basic detache, expressive detache.
6. Etudes - Dont 2, 3; Rode 5 (in detail), overview of others (1, 2, 4, 18).
 
Day 2 (9:00 - 15:00)
1. Left-hand basics - position, articulation, finger dexterity.
2. Shifting.
3. Examples of shifting work in standard repertoire.
4. Vibrato.
5. Chords technique (right and left hand), examples in etudes and repertoire.
6. Putting it all together - starting with Kreisler Praeludium and Allegro in detail.
7. If time left, for younger students - starting with Kreisler Sicilienne and Rigaudon.
 
Day 3 (9:00 - 15:00)
1. Applying technique to student repertoire: 
  • Haydn Concerto in G major
  • Kabalevsky Concerto
  • Mozart Concerti overview
  • Beethoven Romance in F

2. Introducing Baroque - Bach Partitas 2 and 3.

 
Day 4 (9:00 - 15:00)
  • Overview of technical concepts covered in previous days.
  • Cover standard student repertoire based on requests from the participants.
The approach will be highly practical, so all participants are strongly encouraged to bring their instruments.

This workshop is for violin and viola teachers, advanced students with an interest in pedagogy, as well as anybody interested in its content.

Diploma and certificate + -

In order to obtain the diploma and a certificate of attendance, a minimum attendance of 80% will be required.

  1. Places are limited and will be reserved by strict order of application.
  2. When the workshop is full, the application form will not be available, but you will be able to sign up for a waiting list in case a participant drops their place.
  3. Taking pictures and the complete or partial recording of this course by the participants are forbidden, as well as its reproduction or broadcasting.
  4. Without prejudice of the right of withdrawal, the fee is not refundable. The place cannot be used by a different person, or for any other course or other editions of the same course.
  5. Within fourteen calendar days from the date of your registration, you have the right to withdraw from the contract without justification.
