Description + -

Self-Determination Theory shows that students need a specific mix of variables to feel intrinsically motivated. This intrinsic motivation is sometimes stifled in music lessons because of the absence of autonomy. In this workshop, we will learn about autonomy-supportive teaching: what it is; why it is desirable; how to do it. We will discuss the research behind autonomy-supportive teaching, and where more information can be found.

We will then transition to Gameful Pedagogy, an educational framework that has been developed with Self-Determination Theory in mind. We will discuss how Andrea has used gamification in her own teaching, particularly through her event, Cellympics. She will also share her new website I am in the process of creating, where cellists can explore freely and even earn points to take part in a LEGO avatar-building world.
