Violin and viola pedagogy
ROBIN WILSON
The bow arm is the voice of the violin. With it we draw and shape sound, define character and project our musical intention. To master all of the bow strokes needed to create a narrative, a series of fundamental bowing movements must be learnt. This presentation addresses how to teach and develop these movements. Using Kayser, Mazas and Kreutzer etudes, we will explore each movement and discuss how to teach and develop it through increasing stages of complexity.
We will then address the basic bow strokes, correlating how these movements enable their function. Quick and effective ways to teach these will be explored. In addition, we will look at developing a resonant sound using natural arm weight and the ‘push and pull’ mechanism of the bow change. Please bring your violin and bow so you can try these exercises and techniques as the presentation unfolds.
This workshop is for violin and viola teachers, advanced students with an interest in pedagogy, as well as anybody interested in its content.
On the day after the workshop at 9 a.m. (CET), participants will receive private access to watch the recording during the next week, until Monday 3 February at 9 a.m. (CET). This access is protected with password and IP identification.
To obtain a certificate of attendance it is necessary to attend the workshop live and to be in front of the active camera for at least 80% of the total time.
