Violin and viola pedagogy
ATAR ARAD
This online workshop with renowned violist, composer and teacher Atar Arad offers a fresh, holistic approach to music education—one that prioritises emotional well-being, expressive freedom, and the development of a personal artistic voice. The session explores how to create a more joyful, less anxiety-driven learning environment. Arad draws from his extensive experience to help participants recognise how fear and self-doubt can block musical growth, and offers practical strategies for guiding students toward more confident and expressive playing, including a number of emotional, technical and scientific tools designed to reduce or even eliminate stage fright.
A central focus of the workshop is a reexamination of intonation, emphasizing the fact that a modern string player has to master several kinds of intonation, encouraging teachers and students to embrace a more flexible, context-sensitive of its understanding. Another important element in Arad's teaching is the creation of an organic, gradual journey from the left to the right side of the brain, from planning and calculating to living the moment and enjoying the unexpected, from practicing to performing (his new scales method is a big help in this respect as well as in mastering the various kinds of intonation).
The workshop culminates in a discussion of creative courage—helping students find the confidence to explore their own musical ideas and even begin writing their own music. Arad believes that nurturing this kind of creativity is essential to building a musician’s identity and long-term joy in their craft. Through reflection, guided exercises, and conversation, participants will leave with tools to inspire their students to take ownership of their artistry and engage with music in a deeper, more personal way.
Participants are strongly encouraged to attend with their instruments to make the most of this workshop.
This workshop is for violin and viola teachers, advanced students with an interest in pedagogy, as well as anybody interested in its content.
On the day after the workshop at 9 a.m. (CEST), participants will receive private access to watch the recording during the next week, until Monday 18 May at 9 a.m. (CEST). This access is protected with password and IP identification.
To obtain a certificate of attendance it is necessary to attend the workshop live and to be in front of the active camera for at least 80% of the total time.
